When Friends Visit: A Poem

I am blessed.

I admit it freely.

If you know my struggles, you may think otherwise. But you know what, that’s not how I see it.

I see the positive things all around me and that grouping includes my wonderful friends. You. People who come here and read my work. Leave comments or not, you all deserve thank-you’s.

My thank-you is in the form of poem.

This is christyb thanking YOU.

When Friends Visit

I welcome you, hand over a napkin, and

Nudge a dish of words your way.

I tell you a story about my past or about our future,

The unknown or the known I wish I could forget,

Trying to untie knots with nouns, descriptors, and punctuation.

Punctuation for sentences that I wish had stopped long ago.

When you visit, you bring smiles,

Kind words and kind spirits,

Your comments gathering around me like a hug

(Or two)

And I lay my eyes on your words like a pillow,

Savoring the softness you bring to me so often.

We may never have met, yet we share a common bond:

A look at the same page,

Share a twinkle of the eye, or

A smile that can come across as a smirk on some of your beautiful faces.

We both  recognize that my hands typed the words we see,

and that my fingers are slightly weathered,

From weather than reaches beyond the fingertips,

To memories of chaos

And to edges of smiles for the future.

Thank-you, each one of you, for softening this year

With gentle encouragement and

Confident words.

I care for you all, and I wish you all kind skies ahead,

May the weather be with you

And may your hearts be warm and proud.

Christy! Once again you have left me speechless with a tear in my eye. For anyone who hasn’t had the pleasure of meeting you in person, should add it to their bucket list. I consider myself truly honored to have you in my life in the flesh and blood. I have watched you on the rollercoaster you have been riding and I am so grateful for every moment we have had together, the laughter, the smiles, even the tears good and bad. You are my forever friend! Xoxoxoxo

Yes, I am a friend and sure enough I’m visiting you today. When I visit you, I am reminded there are positive, loving people in this world, and that always brings a smile to my heart and face! 🙂 May you have the best of years ahead!

Hi Christy… we have all been on a journey this past year. Some traumatic and some with a rough road. For us the reader your words have come as a glimmer of light to us and we all thank you for the soft, kind compassionate heart you speak with…

Oh Julie, thank-you. I still remember that your blog was one of the first ones I visited when I began this journey. I thought ‘wow’ this is a great writer. Now we are friends and I am smiling. Hugs and love back to you xx

This poem was beautiful. So many words with heartfelt emotion. Tears starting to appear when reading some of the comments. You are going to have to start with a ‘warning’ on your site…make sure the kleenex is handy! LOL.

While I’m sorry I haven’t been by as often as I should, I’m glad I discovered your blog, your words. I learn a lot about you each time I visit and hope, someday, we get the opportunity of sharing a real ice cream sundae instead of a virtual one. 🙂

What a lovely and thoughtful poem. I enjoyed it very much. I think as writers we really live for the feedback we get because it gives us courage to continue. I spent a lot of time thinking that my writing isn’t good enough so it does take courage to just put it out there, and if you are lucky enough to get readers who appreciate what you’ve written, it feels even better. Great work, Christy.

Feedback is so important yes but I refuse to live or die by it… ultimately we have to write for ourselves first or we miss out on the core sentiment we’re striving to ‘click’ with – mind you the comments really can be helpful at bettering my writing. We all need improvement in some way or another! Thank you.
