We Become Friends: A Poem

I cherish my friends, those wonderful people who I let into my section of the world. They are people who I know online and in “real” life. Some friends are younger than me while others are older. Once you become a friend to me, I treasure you so much. Recently I had a bit of a falling out with a friend in “real” life here in Victoria, but we were able to work it out after she apologized to me. I am thankful. I understand that life is not always easy but friendship is something so important and worth fighting for!

Thank you to all of you who support Poetic Parfait and I as I do consider you all friends!

Here is a poem I wrote about friendship and the recent falling out that happenedΒ in my life.

We Become Friends

You cross me and
I get cross –
With sharp edges and worn patterns,
Eager to seize the opportunity and to
Add inches to my height
But
Still slightly unsteady at the bridge’s base.

You base the response I give on
My ability to speak,
Without realizing that my words
Sometimes forget to translate properly.

We become friends
But I worry that I will move sideways
(too quickly)
And you will become a ghost
That I only see in my dreams.

Friendship is not easily earned
But I find I treasure its placement
On a newly dusted shelf –
Your placement there is one I value.

You are right Christy, friendship is not easily earned. It takes so much time to build trust, but it only takes a moment to break trust and friendship. For me the foundation of friendship is “Trust”.

Beautifully written, Christy. I love the metaphor of a repaired friendship in the last stanza.

Friendships are forged throughout life. I’m blessed with my online friendships in a very special way: we share our creative interests and passions with one another, something my friends in the flesh haven’t got much time for.

I’m so glad we’re friends, Christy. Keep inspiring us with your beautiful thoughts.

    Hugs ❀ Irina

Irina, you bring up a great point here! I also love the ability to share creativity with online friends, trading ideas and enjoying art forms in so many varieties. My friends in person here also don’t care to do so very much so it’s great to have this blogging outlet! HUGS

Respect and caring are evident throughout this lovely piece and the language employed to send this message is apt and wholesome. Great work Christy.

Very nice poem and reasoning here, what’s amazing is that image you posted with the withering sunflower, symbolizing perhaps the ephemeral quality that some friendships, inevitably, possess. Nevertheless, your poem brings hope in that if friendships indeed are nourished, they will linger on with the simple act of cherishing them.

YOU my dear are the only one to point out the symbolism behind the image. Thanks Maria as you are spot on with your understanding of it – friends do come and go, with some staying an entire lifetime. Sending you love!

Liked your nice little poem and the sunflowers heading it . this flower is so named because it always blooms towards rays of the morning sun , spreading beauty and cheer in just the same way as your friendship appears to be working its magic with all your cyber friends , myself included…

I am sorry your friend did not realize the importance of mending your relationship. Friendships are not easily earned but once you have a relationship, you must work to keep it strong. You are a wonderful friend and inspiration, Christy. Blessings.

Well said. That feeling that you don’t want to make a misstep but that it could happen. Friendships are so important. Sometimes we forget to voice how worried we are about saying or doing the wrong thing and the other person mistakes it for a lack of interest rather than a fear of upsetting them.

    Hi Christy,

Well articulated thoughts…friends occupy a special place in our hearts, more than the most valuable treasures around the world. I am so glad that I found one more friend, Thanks!

I am happy that your bridge has been mended Christy.. And I loved this line ” Still slightly unsteady at the bridge’s base.”.. May your foundations always grow in strength as you reach out and spread your wings to span the waters of any emotional tide..

I think we are always trying to become more steady in foundation… slowly but surely, as the saying goes… Thank you Sue for taking time to read posts at Parfait during your weekend! I am honored, my friend xx
