My Latest Read: Nine Black Lives by Resa McConaghy

Nine Black Lives by Resa McConaghy

I have the book Nine Black Lives on my tablet! Photo by Christy Birmingham.

There is murder. There is a mystery.

Okay, let me explain. The book is Nine Black Lives by Resa McConaghy. Many of you know Resa for her  blog that features beautiful graffiti and murals, as well as for her costume design work. YES, she’s also a writer. SURPRISED much? I know I was. And then, once I read her debut novel, I was impressed by her writing quality too. She’s got so many talents I’m in awe xo

In Nine Black Lives, the main character is Nicky, a famous actor who is tired of the usual Hollywood fluff scripts. He is searching for something deeper that stretches his talent more. He lives in New York and has a beautiful girlfriend, as well as a chef and a personal assistant. He has played many detectives in movies; in fact, that’s become what he is typecast into being.

When he is offered the script for a movie called Nine Black Lives, he takes it (you will have to read the book to learn why he took that role). When costume designer Lucille is found dead in her “Shrine,” there are a slew of suspects, including her cheating husband.

As Nicky vaguely recalls working with Lucille on the very first movie where he had a lead role, he takes a personal interest in her death and trying to find her killer. Yes, it is clever that author Resa McConaghy has the two roles for Nicky of actor-detective and wanna-be detective in real life.

Cue the action in the book! There were hints dropped throughout the plot about who could have killed Lucille, with possible motives from other people in the cast of Nine Black Lives. Soon, however, the danger ramps up as Nicky’s love Lara and her unborn child have their lives threatened by a stalker.

Is Nicky’s stalker related to Lucille’s death? Why did Lucille die, and how did the murderer get into her home to commit the ruthless act?

Note – when you get to the scene about the dinner party, where there are ten or so characters at the table, you won’t be able to put the book down! Also, you might lose your appetite, along with the dinner guests! Oh and there is funny dialogue at the table too. I was completely fooled by who turned out to be the killer in Resa McConaghy’s Nine Black Lives.

I won’t use the stars rating system for Nine Black Lives by Resa McConaghy because I know Resa personally so it wouldn’t be totally objective. If you haven’t checked out her blogs, find them via the top two links in this post. She also has the writing blog Queen’s End, which is where you can get Nine Black Lives for FREE!

YES, you can read it for free – how generous of Resa! Download the PDF at >> Queen’s End. << Just click the download icon in the upper right-hand corner of that linked page to get your copy of the book. Also, Resa asked: could you please leave her a note in the comments section of the page you download it from if/when you do so. That way she has an idea of the number of downloads. Thanks!

OH and if you missed the collaboration that Resa and I did recently, in which I wrote poems to complement her art gowns, you could read that now too (there’s no murder involved there!)

You are welcome! I am attempting to be like the “New Generation”.
Give it away, give it away, give it away now! If no one hears you, reads you or sees you, then you are invisible.
I hope you like the book! 🙂

This review is one of the most exciting moments of my life, and I have had many.
    Thank you, Christy!
Working in film & television as a costume designer has provided many highs, including the joy of working with Oscar Winners & other “A” list stars & directors.
Times change, and so does reality. I was fortunate in the past.
Yet, I crave a different creative future, much like Nicky! (LOL)
Christy, I got home after the 2nd day on the new TV series, and I’m having a glass of wine. I’m raising a toast to you.
    CHEERS! _Resa xo

😀 Your strange feeling is understandable.
However, there are multi-thousands of musicians putting their work out there for free. Many have gotten rich and famous from doing this. 😀
We are all artists, and no one wants their work to be stolen. Creating an on-line track record, as well as registration of copyright can prevent, or prove theft, which really matters if someone is making lots of money from our intellectual properties.
No one seeing, reading or hearing your work guarantees obliviousness. 😀

I love the idea of romance, acting and a mystery, wow! I will try to get to this, but get passed ‘free’ books on loan from friends and it is fun to read them, then discuss the stories with them. Christy, you are amazing and such a kind friend, you leave me the nicest messages! Hugs, Robin
